Lesson Outline for Live Synth Jamming

This lesson plan provides a comprehensive 6-hour curriculum designed to take a user from basic navigation to advanced live performance techniques using the Korg Electribe Sampler and Korg Monologue.

Part 1: System Setup and Navigation

  • Initial Setup: Understanding power requirements (AC adapter vs. 6 AA batteries) and making proper audio connections to mixers or headphones.
  • Hardware Overview: Identify the different parts

Part 2: Sequencing and Pattern Building

  • Recording Methods:
    • Real-time Recording: Perform parts using the trigger pads while the sequencer is running.
    • Step Sequencing: Use the Sequencer button to manually place notes on specific steps for precise drum programming.
  • Melodic Input: Use Keyboard mode and the Touch Pad to play samples chromatically and Chord mode to trigger complex harmonies from a single pad. Adjust the Key and Scale settings to ensure all melodic parts are harmonically matched.

Part 3: Build songs with Chain Pattern and Set Pattern

  • Pattern Set: Register your favorite patterns to the trigger pads (1–16) for instant pattern switching during a live performance.
  • Pattern Chaining: Use the Chain To and Chain Repeat parameters to automate the transition from one pattern to another, allowing for hands-free song progression.

Part 4: Sequencing on Korg Monologue

Part 5: Sampling and Sound Shaping

  • Capturing External Audio: Use Shift + Record to enter sampling mode. Set the mode to Mono (essential for time-slicing) or Stereo (uses two tracks) and adjust the Input Level to avoid clipping.
  • Resampling: Practice "Resampling," which records the unit’s own output as a new sample, allowing you to bounce down multiple parts or effects into a single sound.
  • Sample Editing: Learn to trim Start, End, and Loop Start points. Use the Digital Gain (+12dB) setting in the Sample Edit menu to make samples punchier and match the volume of internal sounds.
  • The Synth Engine: Explore the Filter section (LPF, HPF, BPF) and Modulation (LFO/EG) to radically transform sampled content.
  • Motion Sequencing: Record knob and button movements (like filter sweeps) into your pattern to create evolving sounds

Part 6: Advanced Arrangement and Slicing

  • Time Slice: Use the Time Slice utility to detect attacks in a rhythmic loop and divide it into individual beats. This allows the sample to follow the pattern's BPM perfectly without changing pitch.
  • Polyphony Management: Understand Voice Assign (Mono 1/2, Poly 1/2). Learn the "fake pad" trick—using monophonic samples with long delays to create atmospheric textures that don't cut each other off.
  • Pattern Parameters: Adjust Swing for groove and Length (up to 4 measures/64 steps) to accommodate longer melodic phrases.
